Pediatrician for Children
Once kids reach school age, they only need an annual visit to their doctor. At Wellness Pediatrics in Birmingham, MI, Dr. Suhad Yaldo is a pediatrician for children and she and her team support kids as they grow into their unique selves, ensuring that they maintain good health and wellness along the way.
Well Child Visits for School-Age Kids
Yearly well child visits to your pediatrician for children include the following elements:
- Physical exam: Annual physical exams are an opportunity for your pediatrician to chart your child’s development and screen for signs of illness, concern, or abnormalities. Vitals will be checked, including vision, ears, nose, throat, lungs, heart, genitals, abdomen, and skin. Your doctor will also review your child’s reflexes, strength, motor function, spine curvature, and check for gait abnormalities.
- Developmental review: Your pediatrician for children will review all the results of the physical exam and assess your child’s health and development, comparing them to their peers in general but, more importantly, to their own rate of growth, looking for consistencies or variations from the norm. This portion of the visit will also include a review of milestones and discuss any cause for concern if there are notable delays.
- Vaccinations and immunizations: Once children reach school age, they do not need vaccinations at every well child visit. Scheduled vaccinations are given as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and around ages 4 to 6, children will receive their last doses of vaccines to prevent against DTaP, polio, MMR, and VAR. Flu and COVID vaccines are recommended annually.
Sick Appointments at Pediatrician for Children
Children children get sick, especially when they’re in a school environment and exposed to far more people and germs than they might otherwise encounter. We try to make it as convenient as possible for parents to get their child in to see the doctor right away with same-day sick visits for a diagnosis, treatment, and medications as needed.
We maintain separate sick rooms so there is no overlap between one child’s well visit and another child’s sick visit. Please call as early in the day as possible to speak to our staff to determine if your child needs an appointment.
Mental Wellness Evaluations for Kids
A child’s mental health is an essential part of their overall well-being. Your pediatrician for children will assess your child’s mental wellness by asking both of you questions, which can include queries about school, home life, friends, and more. It’s important to determine whether a child is suffering from anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD, stress, concentration difficulties, behavioral problems, or any mental health condition that could affect their health, school performance, and overall happiness.
