Pediatrician for Newborns
Choosing a pediatrician for newborns is one of the first big decisions you will make as a parent. At Wellness Pediatrics in Birmingham, MI, we are ready to hold your hand as you make your way through those special early months of your newborn’s life.
Meet Us Before We All Meet Your Baby
If you’re expecting and are due soon, now is the time to schedule a prenatal tour of the practices you’re interested in, interview pediatricians, and find the place that will suit your family best and offers the specific type of care you’re seeking. At Wellness Pediatrics, we provide:
- Annual well visits
- Sick visits
- Vaccinations
- Lactation advice
- Nutrition advice
Now is the time to ask all your questions and have them addressed by a pediatrician for newborns. We want you to feel confident about the kind of care your baby will receive. Knowing that you have chosen the right doctor for your family before you are sleep-deprived and hormonal will give you peace of mind at just the right time.
We ask that you call us when your baby has been born so we can see them before you go home together as a family for the first time. If this is not possible, we set up your first appointment for one to three days after you leave the hospital or birthday center.
What to Expect at Your First Appointment
That very first visit to the pediatrician is a whirlwind. It’s probably the first time you’re packing the diaper bag, getting yourself fully dressed, and safely strapping your entire family into the car. Here is what to expect at your first appointment:
- Exam: Your newborn will be weighed and measured at each visit so a growth chart can be established. This helps us track development and recognize any major changes in patterns.
- Feedings: We will go over nursing and formula feeding, breastfeeding challenges, the amount your baby should be eating, and more.
- Skin care: We will discuss daily skin care routine, including sponge baths, diaper rash, cradle cap, and eczema.
- Safety: We will discuss proper car seat habits for your newborn as well as safety matters regarding sleepers, pets, crib mattress, carriers, back sleeping, and more.
- Consultation: When your pediatrician for newborns asks if there’s anything else you want to talk about it, go ahead and talk. No questions are off-limits where your newborn is concerned. We are here to take care of them and to help you feel like a confident parent.
Newborn Preventive Care
Your newborn’s immunization schedule typically begins during their hospital stay with their first Hepatitis B vaccine. The next vaccinations will begin between the 1- and 2-month visits, including:
- HepB: Second dose
- DTap: Diptheria, tetanus, pertussis
- RV: Rotavirus
- Hib: Meningitis
- PCV: Pneumococcal
- IPV: Polio
Sick Visits for Newborns
When you have a newborn, every cry, squeal, or sound your baby makes can be worrisome, but especially if it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with them being wet, tired, or hungry. This stress is normal and you should react to what’s going on. A pediatrician for newborns understands your worries and fears.
Though you do everything possible to keep them safe, infants can get sick too. Our office is always here to offer sick appointments to ensure that all is well with your baby. Any fever of 100.4 or greater in an infant under 3 months old requires a call to your pediatrician.
